Young people in Monwabisi Park have no recreational facilities at all. There are no safe gathering places – so most of the teenagers resort to hanging around in shebeens or taverns. Alcohol, drug abuse, criminal activity and teenage pregnancies are huge problems here – mostly due simply to boredom and having nowhere else to go or nothing constructive to do.
This has now changed radically with the opening of the youth centre. Here youngsters of all ages have a large, safe and well appointed room to meet together, have fun, play games, take part in creative activities such as drama, music practice, reading or artwork.
The large screen TV and DVD player means that educational programmes are available to the little ones in the crèche, and we are hoping to get satellite TV for such channels as National Geographic, Discovery, History and Supersport.
Once a month groups will be taken on outings to places such as the beach, Table Mountain, Robben Island, nature reserves etc. The Golden Arrow bus company very kindly sponsors the transport costs of these outings.
