Dizu Plaatjies |
We already have a traditional dance group – they won second prize in the Umoya We Afrika traditional dance competition last year.
Dizu Plaatjies the world renowned traditional musician and one of our directors is donating some traditional musical instruments, and we have received donations from Spirit Aid New Zealand of several recorders.
Our focus is on promoting and preserving the valuable African musical heritage, which is in danger of taking second place to modern, western music such as rap and hip hop. Our youngsters have so much to be proud of in their own culture, but few places are fostering that pride. Regular workshops in making and playing traditional instruments will be held on weekends.
We will shortly be partnering with the New Africa Theatre group who will be running drama workshops with the youngsters.
Art and craft workshops will also be arranged once facilitators have been found.
