Many of the people living in Monwabisi Park come from rural areas where African traditions are still strong. There is an enormous wealth of traditional songs and dances that has remained as yet untapped, and is becoming forgotten. The purpose of the Youth Group is multifold – not only to give schoolchildren something positive to do in the evenings, but also to give them pride in their knowledge of traditional songs and dances that would otherwise be lost in an urban setting. The economic benefit comes when they receive payment for their hard work from visitors to the centre – and so far visitors have come from Japan, Sweden, Australia, USA, UK, Germany, Switzerland and Denmark.
