Ms Nomluleki Sophie Bartman (Makhosi Athobile)
Makhosi Athobile is a highly respected traditional healer and sangoma. Her work takes her all over South Africa. She has established a home for abandoned children in Vrygrond, an informal settlement just outside Muizenberg, Cape Town. Her prime concern is the health and well being of the children of this country, combined with a desire to re-establish pride in our traditional culture.

Dianne Womersley (BA)
Dianne Womersley is the founding member of the Shaster Foundation. She has worked with children and adults in impoverished communities in the Cape Flats, and was involved in an outreach project set up in 1980 to assist TB patients in Nyanga, Crossroads and Guguletu.

Stanley Ndlovu
Stanley Ndlovu is one of South Africa’s most talented sculptors. He was awarded a scholarship to study at the prestigious Chapungu Sculpture Park in Zimbabwe, and has returned to South Africa anxious to teach other young aspiring artists. He works with a group of young people from Khayelitsha sharing his knowledge and expertise. He is presently based in Denmark.

Geoff Ainslie

Mzikantu Dizu Plaatjies
Dizu “Zungula” Plaatjies formed the well-known folk group Amampondo in 1979. Amampondo was South Africa’s leading Xhosa folk ensemble for many years. With their traditional garb and handmade instruments, the 11-piece group has transformed the traditional musical style of Xhosa into an international phenomenon.

One of Nelson Mandela’s favourite bands, Amampondo has toured throughout the world and represented South Africa during the opening ceremonies of the Olympic Games in Atlanta, GA in 1996 with Dizu at the helm.

Since then he has formed a new group Ibuyambo (meaning “back to our roots”) and continues to enjoy outstanding success internationally and at home.

Dizu is a senior lecturer in African music at the University of Cape Town’s College of Music, and is one of South Africa’s most highly respected traditional musicians.
