Township tourism is fast becoming a major attraction in South Africa. However, most visitors cannot experience an authentic slice of township life when they are confined to a bus driving around.
As Cape Town attracts billions of visitors annually, tourism can provide income for many people. Having a unique and safe centre for visitors can bring large amounts of income into this community.
In the squatter camps around Cape Town one finds the most vibrant community life – but a big problem for visitors is a simple and basic one – the lack of sanitary toilet facilities. Our flush toilets are part of the biogas digester system – a most useful facility for visitors!
Income creation is the purpose of this element of the project – visitors enjoy spreading wealth in this community. The visitors’ centre is operated on a co-operative basis. Many women contribute towards the delicious meals served – e.g. Ma’dhlamini’s ginger beer, Magazi’s steamed bread and Nolethu’s chicken stew are great favourites with all visitors.
The Indlovu centre offers visitors and authentic and safe experience of African food, décor, dance, song and craftwork.
Our wooden Wendy house is about to be turned into a small shop where visitors can buy a variety of handmade and home grown items. Anyone who makes handmade items is free to use the shop to sell their products, as long as they have a certain level of quality.
Integrated into this element are basic business skills training for all the budding entrepreneurs.
Many volunteers with business training enjoy working here using their skills and education to empower the community.
