Our free community health centre
Our free community health centre opened in June 2007 staffed by a professional health care worker, Glen Vondo. The clinic was built at the request of the community who had suffered pitifully from a lack of health care. Ambulances can take over 6 hours to reach this place – and mostly they are very poorly equipped. The nearest government clinic is 4 kilometres away – a long walk for a sick person! In November 2007 an average of 25 patients per day was attended to, in February 2008 this number had increased dramatically to 100 per day, with people coming from all over the peninsula for treatment. At the end of 2008 a total of 2,000 new patients monthly were streaming in for help.
Our focus is on improving community health in a holistic way, with special focus on women and children. We have an attending volunteer gynaecologist who regularly consults patients at the clinic, as well as various health professional and students who volunteer their time to serve the community at the Indlovu Clinic.
In order to give proper attention of the needs of the immediate Monwabisi Park community numbers have had to be limited to approximately 50 patients per day. With more funding this number could be doubled.
Regular health workshops are held for special needs groups – i.e. young mothers’ support; stroke patients; HIV/AIDS counselling etc.
The importance of this free clinic cannot be stressed strongly enough. Numerous traffic accidents and weekend stabbings increase the need for emergency aid tremendously.
The Indlovu clinic is saving lives at a ‘grassroots’ level and we need all the support we can get. The patient load increases daily as more and more people hear about the excellent medications and compassionate care given out.
The clinic does not dispense pharmaceutical drugs, but is subsidised by the nutritional supplement company Enzyme Process Africa.
Volunteers from the USA, Australia, Brazil and Germany have made significant contributions to the health of this community. Volunteer medical staff are welcomed – and accommodation is available in our neighbouring guest house if required.
