The fire destroyed all our accommodation, but we hope to rebuild in the NewYear.

Before the fire our warm, African hospitality was enjoyed by all the visitors who come to stay. The Indlovu Backpackers’ Lodge hosted backpackers, students, volunteers and travellers wanting a different experience of Cape Town. The views were wonderful – from Table Mountain right around False Bay. Sea and mountains all in one!

The rooms were all sharing, with double bunks and lock-up cupboards. We used natural energy for lighting and hot water.

We believed in comfortable beds, hot showers, funky African décor and the friendliest neighbours in the world!

Chillling in the lounge by the bar, chatting to the neighbours or lazing on the balcony in the sun enjoying a glass of homemade ginger beer with a bar-b-que were regular occupations. We provided 3 meals a day, but guests provided their own drinks.

Our lodge created jobs for 4 people as well as the income needed to buy medicines for our free community clinic.

For a more private place we had Makazi’s Guest House – a small gem built from sandbags by 6 members of the community. This self-catering cottage had a special charm of its own and could accommodate up to 6 people. (See guest review in the Sunday Times ).
