Already the centre is a place for learning about sustainable energy use and water conservation. We have a water tank that collects rainwater, but any other water has to be brought in by hand, as there is no running water available on site. The children are taught to wash their hands over a vegetable to get maximum use from this precious resource.

The earthworm toilet - a magnificent blue throne - is the only one in the area that is non-smelling. Most people go into the bushes nearby to relieve themselves, and many women have been attacked and raped there.

The earthworms transform human waste into rich vermicompost after a period of time. So the people feed the worms – the worms feed the vegetable garden and the vegetable garden feeds the people. Permaculture in action!

With donations of computer boxes we plan to have the youngsters making solar ovens, which they will sell for a minimum charge to thrifty housewives. Why not use such an abundant resource as the sun? Solar ovens cook almost anything that can be cooked in a conventional oven – it just takes longer, but it saves fuel and lowers the likelihood of fires.
