The lack of medical help in this area is desperate - sick children have to walk or be carried to the nearest day hospital which is 6 kms away. To be there when the gates open, they have to leave home at 3am. Even then they are not guaranteed to be seen by a doctor.
The hospital is over crowded and understaffed and there are little or no medicines available at the best of times.
It is a day hospital and, in the event of a real emergency, the child will die, as it takes hours for an ambulance to get there.
Most of the children are orphans due to HIV/AIDS, TB, STD's Respiratory Disease etc. These children have no way of getting any other health care other than through us. All children under 7 years old are infested with parasitic worms. Many are malnourished with consequent disease risks and in winter very few of them are unaffected by coughs and colds.
